FEOKTISTOV'S FLIGHT SUIT

To fit three cosmonauts into the crowded Vostok spacecraft, Soviet designers made a risky decision for the Voskhod 1 mission: the cosmonauts would not wear bulky pressure suits, usually worn as a precaution in case the vehicle depressurized. Konstantin Feoktistov wore this wool two-piece flight suit on Voskhod 1 instead of a pressure suit.

SURVIVAL GEAR

Soviet spacecraft were designed to come down on land, ideally on the plains near the launch site. In case one landed in wilderness outside the intended recovery zone, the crew's survival kit included a hunting knife.

Voskhod knife Feoktistov did not need to use this knife on Voskhod 1, but the Voskhod 2 crew almost needed theirs. They landed about 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) off course and reported hearing the howls of animals nearby during their overnight wait to be rescued.

FIRST SPACEWALK

On March 18, 1965, Aleksei Leonov became the first person to venture outside an orbiting spacecraft. He was secured only by an umbilical cord attached to the life-support systems of Voskhod 2. Leonov spent 20 minutes outside in the vacuum of space.
